I made this sketch of a travel acquaintance, Branden, and his girlfriend (I think) on a wood panel late the other night. I saw a photo of them awhile ago and the pose caught my attention. The plan was to finish it in acrylic, but I wasn’t happy with how it was going and ended up covering it and going in a different direction altogether. Fortunately, I got a shot of the rough drawing, which I kind of like. Better luck next time, maybe I’ll even give this one another try.

Coming up with the concept for this Mother’s Day gift took some time, but the process was straightforward after that.
I really like art that incorporates words and wanted to give it a shot, but the risk of clichés is high, so I was stalling while waiting to think of an idea that wasn’t lame. I’ve never been interested in poetry, but when I heard Sarak Kay perform If I Should Have a Daughter, I enjoyed it (she’s consistently cool, if you’re into spoken-word stuff, check her out). The lyrics were Mother’s Day appropriate and I needed to make a gift for my mom, so I put the dots together and came up with this project.

Last week, I used friends’ birthdays to make decisions easier when picking subjects for portrait practice. After McKenna, Ivar was up.
Awhile ago, I saw a drawing composed of the alphabet and it looked interesting, so I tried a similar style using numbers because he likes math. I sketched this pretty quickly while flying home from a weekend in Eugene, so it’s not super accurate, but there’s a little resemblance and it’s a little clever. That counts for something? Happy belated 23rd.

Anyone who knows me knows me can confirm that I am a super slow decision-maker when it comes to things that don’t really matter. I’ve been spending too much time deciding whose portrait to draw, so this week, I’m using birthdays to dictate the choices. Happy 23rd, McKenna.

I’ve been practicing faces lately. Most of them are still pencil sketches, but Sundays are good days to spend time finishing projects. I went over this portrait of Megan with india ink.

Here’s a sketch of my sister. It’s not finished yet and I’m not sure where it’s going. Originally, I had planned to make it abstract. Failed.
